Goddess Varahi is a form of Goddess Parvati. She is a representation of Yama’s energy. She arose from the boar form of Lord Vishnu. She appears to have tribal origins where worship of the female counterparts of gods is widespread. The tribes are often known to worship the fierce aspected forms of goddesses. Varahi is counted among the Sapta Matrikas who aided Devi Durga in her fight against Shumbha, Nikumbha and their asur army. So she is often given warrior attributes. However she is also motherly and loving.
In this masterful depiction of the boar goddess, she is shown sitting in sukhasana, over a cajon stool placed upon a rectangular bronze pedestal. Her crown is the Karanda-mukuta and she wears ornaments made of corals. Nupura anklets adorn her feet. In this four-armed representation of the goddess, her rear hands hold hala and musala while the front hands are held out in Abhaya and Varada Mudras. She is widely believed to ward off enemies and fill the homes of her devotees with uncontested prosperity
