Lord Vishnu is responsible for the preservation of this universe, which is periodically created and destroyed by Brahma Ji and Lord Shiva respectively. This vertically erect image of the Supreme Lord represents his most standard and popular form in India.
The Lord’s regal aspect is highlighted here by the tall crown on his head known as kirtimukuta. He stands firm in the sampada posture on a lotus placed on a rectangular base. The columnar posture expresses his cosmic nature, reminding us of the cosmic pillar that connects heaven and earth.
His upper right hand holds the flaming wheel, a symbol of the sun, the universal mind, and the cosmic order, while the conch in the corresponding left hand signifies the ocean with its material riches and also the primordial sound. The club supported by the lower left hand symbolizes knowledge that destroys the transient world, establishing the worshipper into the timeless realm. Finally, the lower right hand makes the gesture of reassurance, which is the ultimate boon for all spiritual practitioners.
This sculpture was cast in the city of Aligarh in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
