A superfine pattachitra such as this one is the crown jewel of Vaishnava Indian art. It is a pattachitra, which means that the image (‘chitra’) in question is executed on a handmade canvas made from locally produced materials (‘patta’). As an inimitable folk art form, it is a Geographical Indication of Puri, the temple town of the state of Odisha where this has been made.

This pattachitra is a composite of multiple panels. Each panel is a standalone painting in itself as it is replete with detail and a pregnant narrative. Together, the narratives tell the complete (‘sampoorna’) story of the Ramayana. There are multiple episodes of the victory of Rama, the upholder of dharma, over adharma. A picture of His happy union with Seeta, surrounded by Bharata, Shatrughna, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, is at the very centre of the pattachitra.

The minimalistic colour palette ensures that the focus remains on the lines and the narratives contained therein. The backgrounds of the panels alternate between black and red colours, while the figures and objects in the foreground are in white. Such a work of art would look good in a room with any wall paint combination.
