Puri is reputed to be the home of Lord Jagannath. It is where He resides with His siblings, Balarama and Subhadra. The great temples of Puri dedicated to the holy trinity make it one of the prime temple towns in the East Coast. As such, the art produced in the region - especially the folk art of Odisha - heavily features the Jagannath-Balarama-Subhadra trio.

The pattachitra that you see on this page illustrates the point. It is a vividly coloured composition with the trio at heart. With Devi Subhadra situated between Her two brothers, it conforms to the traditional iconography of this roopa (form) of Krishna. The siblings are housed within a temple structure, which features offerings of fruit and a conch.

Mahesha and Brahma flank the central temple structure. The backdrop of the templetop is as yellow as the sunset skies in the tropics. It is superimposed with a myriad of birds headed homeward or making a stop right there. The customary dashavatara iconographies are to be found in circular panels along the upper and lower edges of the canvas.
