The person who takes up chanting of Vedas has to undergo the rigorous training and practice for 12 years. There are various methods of recitation of one sloka. If you imagine any sloka with say 5 letters (say 1 2 3 4 5) the continuous recitation in sequence of these letters is the first level and is known as “Samhithai”.
1. Reciting each letter in a sloka separately i.e. 1, 2,3,4,5, is known as padam. 2. Reciting two letters in sequence i.e., 12, 23, 34, 45, is known as Kramam. 3. Reciting to two letters in this order i.e., 122112, 233223, 344334 is known as Jhadai. 4. Reciting of three letters in this order i.e., 1221123321123, 2332234432234 is known as Ghanam rendering.
