Antarmahal

Producers: A B Corp & Vashu Bhagnani

Set in 1878 when India was under the reel of British power. Antarmahal paints the life of Bhubaneswar Chowdhury’s (Shroff) obsession for an heir and desire for power.

Terrified that his growing age will prevent him from fathering a son, he casts aside his beautiful wife of 12 years, Mahamaya (Ganguly), and marries the very young and vulnerable Jasomati (Khan). As the women share a complex relationship of insecurity. Bhubaneswar aims to augment his power in the British hierarchy with a unique celebration of Durga Puja…sculpt the goddess in the image of Queen Victoria.

Brijbhushan (Bachchan) enters Antarmahal to sculpt and make money but is struck by the tragic plight of Jasomati and allows his creativity to get better of his caution. In a vortex that begins to spin out of control. Antarmahal tells the story about the lengths to which superstition and despair will drive a man.

-Review at the 49th London Film Festival

“Now, it would be no exaggeration to call Rituparno Ghosh one of the most powerful filmmakers of the country.”

-Subhash K Jha

“Roopa, without doubt, is the star performer.”

-Sanghamitra Chakraborty, Outlook

“Soha does a good balancing act in her role of child-woman straddling dual world of clay dolls and marital rape. Abhishek’s is an endearing, redeeming male cameo…Rupa is easily principal actor, emoting a wide spectrum.”

-Mandira Mitra, The Telegraph
