The author of this Thamrga' Dewan Venkappayya was a great prolific writer of the 18th Century A D., was also known as Venkamatya. His contribution to the dramatic world is great both qualitatively and quantitatively. He has exemplified all major types of Sanskrit Drama. Venkamatya was a minister of Mysore serving normally under the Mysore Kings, Krishnaraja Wodeyar II, Nanjaraja Wodeyar and Bettada Chamaraja Wodeyar, but actually under Hyder Ali from 1763 A.D. to 1780 A.D. He was an eminent scholar in Sanskrit and Kannada. He was also interested in music and painting.
Pradhani Venkappayya played a very prominent role in the History of Mysore, during the 18th Century. He belongs to a village Ramapura which is mentioned in almost all his works, which is on the banks of the Kapini river near Cattanahalli, about 10 miles South-West of Mysore.
It is really admirable that Venkappaiah could write such fine works inspite of his heavy responsibilities in political and social life.
