Introduction The term Upanisad means that which is learnt by sitting close to a teacher (upa-samipe, nisadya-upavisya, sisyena acaryat grhyamanatvat upanisaditi). As the word implies Upanisads represent a body of literature that contain higher knowledge requiring special initiation. It is considered paravidya that seeks the higher goal of emancipation or moksa as contrasted with the aparavidya concerned with the values such as dharma, artha and kama. They contain the answers to the philosophical quests of the ancient seers who sought truth, knowledge and everlasting happiness. Since they form the concluding section of the Vedas they are referred to as Vedanta and eventually the term began to be attributed to the well-known system that emerged from it.
